I love fall and Autumn Decor. As soon as the temperature goes below 75°, I’m ready to deck out the house in pumpkins, leaves and scarecrows. One very special thing about our house is it’s red front door. When my husband and I first started dating, and fantasizing about our future, we envisioned a cozy house, with lots of pillows and blankets, children, a garden, and a red front door. When we redid the exterior of our home, he made sure that no matter what, we ended up with that red front door.
The color of the door is great all year, and I love the way my White Dollar Store wreath looks hanging on it. But when I go to put an autumn wreath up, only certain oranges and yellows will do. That is why the idea of a neutral autumn wreath was so high on my list this September.
For this project, I used the dead leaves from 5 sweet corn stalks. If you’re not growing any corn in your garden this year, no worries! Any farmers market that sells sweet corn should be able to help you obtain some of these leaves. For the wreath frame, I simply took a metal hanger and re shaped it. I secured everything with a spool of floral wire that I had left over from my cousins wedding. All told, if you were to purchase the supplies needed for this project, you could probably do it for less than $10. Can’t beat that!
The first step in this project is create your wreath frame. I snipped the curved end off of a metal hanger and reshaped the rest into a circle. You could also leave the ‘hook’ on the top as a way to hang the wreath if you need it.
Once you have your frame, it’s time to fill it with your corn stalk leaves! Take 2-3 leaves and fold them into half or thirds (depending on the length of your leaves) to create a nice full bundle. Take a length of floral wire and wrap it around the center, leaving a long wire ‘tail’ you can use to attach the bundle to the frame.
After I attached 6 or 7 bundles to my frame, I was able to start tacking in smaller pieces to fill in little gaps and help round out the shape of the wreath. By snipping off some longer leaves and fluffing out some of my bundles, I was able to get a nice neutral colored front door wreath. I tucked in a cute little miniature Scare Crow and it looks so adorable on the red front door!
I didn’t spray my wreath with any type of clear coat or paint, so, it won’t survive to re-use next year. For 45 minutes and found objects, however, I’m really pleased with how this piece looks. When I need another one next fall, it will be a fun “Harvest” project. After the sweet corn has all been picked from the garden, we’ll know it’s time to make our Corn Leaf Autumn Wreath.
