Here lately, my kiddo has been able to sit and focus on one task for a little bit of time, and, we’re ripping up nearly all of our “Flap” books that he likes to flip through. In an effort to create something a bit more sturdy that would continue to help him with his fine motor skills and give Momma a 15 minute break from time to time, I whipped up this Busy Board during nap time.

For the backing, I used a scrap piece of wood from the barn, but, you could purchase a 1″x10″x24″ from your hardware store for a few bucks. I did let him choose a paint color from the spray paint display a few days ago and was pleased with his good taste in color.

For the hardware, instead of wandering the hardware store, I turned to Amazon (as usual!) and was surprised at how cost effective it was. I ordered a Door Chain, Hook & Eye, Gate Latch, Barrel Bolt Lock and a Safety Hasp for under $20! I found claw clasp in a drawer in the barn and it rounded out my collection of Hardware to 6 pieces.

I painted my backing board and left it to dry overnight. Then I took all my pieces out and mapped out how I wanted them. I realized I needed to hinge my Gate Latch, so, I dug an old itty bitty hinge out of the toolbox and attached it to a scrap piece of wood so it could swing in & out of the latch.

After I mapped it out, it only took me 30 minutes to attach all my hardware. When my Kiddo woke up from his nap, the project was complete and ready for a test run, and he LOVES it! He’s had so much fun figuring out how each piece works and has kept himself busy for almost an HOUR now. For me, a guaranteed hour of occupied toddler hands seems totally worth $20 worth Amazon Hardware.
This would be a fun board to make with any types of catch, clasp or hinge you might have in the junk drawer or find in the Hardware Store. Let me know what you think and be sure to let me know if you make one of your own. I’d love to see it!
