We’ve really jumped, head first, into the world of plants this Summer – indoor and outdoor. I’ve never had success growing a single thing in my life, so, successfully growing a garden and a handful of House Plants has been wildly satisfying. Also, addicting. And when you start adding up the costs of everything, it’s easy to see how this hobby could get a bit expensive.

I really LOVE the look of Macrame’ Plant Hangers but a cursory glance around the Etsy shops I love quickly nipped any visions of Hanging Baskets in the bud. Even the simple ones were running around $10 a piece, and when you start thinking about how many you’d like throughout the house, that starts adding up.

So, instead of spending a weeks worth of groceries in one fell swoop, I dug out a 5mm spool of cord from my craft tub, and decided to see what I could do with a simple braid.

I started by cutting 6 pieces of cord to 68″ and taping them together at the top of my Kitchen Bench.

After I got the six pieces taped down to the bench, I separated the strands into twos and braided them about 3/4″ of the way down.

I kept the braid tight and straight and then knotted it a few times so it wouldn’t fall out.

Once the braided part of the hanger was done, I tied it off at the top and hung it up on my door to place a knot at the bottom. For this knot, I used the same, very unscientific, version of knotting… just tie, and tie and tie. I’m sure my Eagle Scout Father would have some pointers for me, but, in his absence, this will hold.

Once I had it knotted up good and tight, I gave it a whirl to see if the Potted Plant would sit in the six strands. You definitely need something to hang the piece from or a volunteer to hold it at the top so you can wriggle the pot around inside the strands of cord.

I soaked all my knots in some wood glue to help them hold up over time and then they were ready to show off! My husband screwed in these ceiling hooks with anchors so we can be sure that the weight of the plants don’t pull the hooks out.

This one in my Kitchen is perfect for catching morning sunlight. I’m so happy with the way it turned out!

I’ve ordered more cute 5.5″ White Pots from Amazon that will be arriving today and will look super adorable in these hangers! I’m looking forward to putting plants in every sunny corner of our home now without worrying about the kiddo or the dog knocking over potted plants.
